Asia Trip 015 - Shenzhen 深圳, China 中国- 001

Nick Hogan July 29, 2019

I MADE IT BACK TO THE USA! I have been home for a week now and am thoroughly enjoying the clean air, western style toilets, and law and order. Now that I have caught up on sleep and have put back on some weight, I am finally putting up all of the things from my time in China. During my stay I was not able to use Squarespace, Google, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, or Twitter. So now I am doing a dump of all of the cool places I visited and photos I’ve taken.

Asia Trip 014- Singapore - 001

Nick Hogan May 28, 2019

I just spend the last two weeks in Northern Thailand awaiting my Chinese visa. During that waiting period, I decided to go to Pai and met some Singaporeans who educated me on all things Singapore and it’s fascinating. Over the course of our conversation I learned the below:

  • All Singapore male over the age of eighteen have to compulsory military service, almost exactly like Israel

  • Singapore is the shining beacon of capitalism in an almost exclusively Muslim territory

    • Malaysia is predominantly Muslim, they share a border with Singapore

      • This is significant because Malaysia is starting to become a haven for ISIS members, which makes the Malaysia-Singapore border very contentious. Making Singapore feel like they have to take even more precautions across the board.

    • Indonesia is the worlds largest Muslim country with about 12% of the worlds Muslim population

  • There is a huge wealth gap, think crazy rich asians vs. slumdog millionaire. It’s universe of difference.

  • There is a test kids take that determines what schools they can go to, what their career will be and a lot of other factors very early in life

  • Also they have quota on Indians that can be lawyers, apparently too many Indians are lawyers and they’re taking jobs away from others.

Asia Trip 013 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - 002 (Batu Caves)

Nick Hogan May 28, 2019

This was such a wild and incredible place, I thought it should have its own post. Plus I took a metric fuck ton (technical term) of pictures at this place from seeing monkeys stealing various things to incredible caves nestled into mountains to the incredibly colorful steps. This place was a total 10/10, would recommend.

Asia Trip 013 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - 001

Nick Hogan May 22, 2019

So I have been bouncing all over the past few weeks. I went from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore to Bali to Chiang Mai. My original plan was to live and work in Bali for two months, but I was there for three days and fucking hated it. It felt like a mix of Los Angeles 2.0 mixed with Tijuana on a huge island with Bangkok level traffic. It was fucking gross, overdeveloped, commercialized, totally stripped of its incredible culture and was so expensive. It was the traveling equivalent of my body rejecting an organ.

So I completely freaked out for about twelve hours, thought about what I really wanted to on this trip, and realized I want to be by the mountains for the second half of this trip. So I booked a last minute flight to Chiang Mai, am awaiting my Chinese Visa and will be traveling throughout China for two months! More updates to come.

Asia Trip 012 - Film from the First Four Months - 003

Nick Hogan May 16, 2019

I recently was in Bali and got three rolls of film developed from the past four months of traveling. These little babies have made it through seven countries, tropical rain storms, countless bus rides, and a silly amount of immigration and security checkpoints. Having all three of these rolls in tact is nothing short of a god damn Christmas miracle.

This roll has shots from working in Thailand for two months, wandering around Koh Phangan, and adventuring with Cate throughout Koh Phangan, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Koh Phi Phi.

Portugal Trip
June 22, 2025

Some photos and thoughts from a trip to Portugal in April 2025. Finally wrote everything down and cobbled it together. This is my first time in mainland Europe and went to Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Porto.

Learning more about the bittersweet curse of nothing feels as good as leaving home, and nothing feels as good as coming back home.

Costa Rica Trip
May 6, 2023

So it’s been about a month since I went to Costa Rica with Connor for about ten days. Apart from the flight and the first nights accommodation, everything else was booked last minute or an hour or two in advance. There was no pressure and it felt nice to have the freedom to change things if we needed, which we did frequently.

June 26, 2021

This is the second leg of our camping trip in Utah where we hiked and stayed around Bryce Canyon National Park. We camped in a wonderful upscale glamping tent and slept in beds above the ground. The days were hot at around 105 degrees and the nights were chilly at around 40 degrees.

SF Trip 003 - Third Quarantine Roll of Film Developed - 35mm
September 13, 2020

Just got a third roll of quarantine film back. The past couple weeks have been spent relaxing outside as much as possible, day trips along the coast, and just getting lost zigzagging in the city. These are some scenes from living life a little more slowly and six feet apart.

SF Trip 002 - Second Quarantine Roll of Film - 35mm
July 29, 2020

This is my second roll of film developed in quarantine. These past few months have been filled with strange times that feel like they keep getting stranger. One of the things that has kept me calm and has been a great release has been continuing to wander around the city in the quiet hours of the day. Waking up early in the morning to bike or wander around the city with no real goal other than getting out of the house and breathing fresh air. These are some subdued scenes from the past few months.

I just got my first roll of film developed in quarantine. I have been staying sane by running all over Golden Gate Park, reading mountains of books, and being one of the few people still wandering around the city. These are some scenes from living life a little slower and staying six feet apart.

Asia Trip 021 - Western Sichuan 川西 - 002
October 17, 2019

I absolutely LOVE TAGONG! It feels so unique, foreign, genuine, and real. It feels like the wild west here. Everyone has cowboy hats on, rides horses, there are big grasslands and it really feels like you’re living life on the fringes.

This place has a certain ineffable quality to it, that people can’t quite figure out. It feels like an old western way station town with monasteries, filled with so much Buddhist culture. The people here are gruff but unusually friendly, more wild and very rough. Everyone you talk to is usually Buddhist and are dressed in either normal clothes or traditional robes.
